Webtacular World Issue # 94, September 20, 2015

Greetings Webtaculators! Summer ends this week. So put your bbq’s away, and get ready for the influx of Christmas commercials. WINTER IS COMING. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Debate: Round 2
Why: Because the clown car of candidates is slowly dwindling down to business owners who have not really been all that great at running businesses. Perfect.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Death As A Business Opportunity
Why: Because this is why health care does not work within a capitalist society.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Go To Law School Now
Why: Because no one else wants to go, so law schools (and their alumni) are paying for you to go.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: Noah’s Ark In Words
Why: Because scientists recently created an index of over 2.3 million species on Earth. Read the whole thing here.

Why: Because who doesn’t love an underdog story?

TV THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: The Emmys Just Happened
Why: Because winter came, men madded, but an accessory to murder stole the show.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Return Of Johnny
Why: Because Black Mass is supposed to be pretty good.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (9 min. watch)
What: Practice What You Preach
Why: Because Lil Dicky (I hate typing that) managed to make a pretty good version of a standard rap video for free.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: Mapping Old SF
Why: Because seeing where pictures were taken is actually a really cool way to see how a city changes over time.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: When A Series Continues Without Its Author
Why: Because even though it recently seems that authors’ characters seem to be more important than the authors themselves, this has pretty much always been the case.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: A Resurrection
Why: Because most people wrote off Destiny sometime in the middle of last year due to being a very pretty game with very little to do. The Taken King surprisingly fixes that.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Math With Comedians; Desert Solar System; Dislike
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Any Of These Nerf Guns
Why: Because Brian deserves it.
SIDE NOTE TIME: So. This weekend, I installed a bunch of bike racks at Salesforce (don’t ask). One of the locations was what i can best describe as an “adult” play area in the basement level of one of the buildings. It included video game consoles, ping pong and pool tables, a wood working / bike tool area, workout equipment, and a giant bar complete with working taps. However, the most prevalent item was various Nerf weapons scattered throughout the room. Basically, the most successful workers of my generation are continuously shooting each other with foam darts. That’s why if you give me the tools, I will get the best jobs, win their war games, and become the King of Salesforce. Or something.

Why: Because end of life care for terminally ill patients is about to get markedly better for Californians. It is one of only 4 states to offer this care. Colorado is not one of them.

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (1 hr. 40 min. watch)
What: Another Year, Another Apple Keynote
Why: Because now Apple reinvented the pencil! This is a Colorado pencil. Jony Ive did not design that one.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: So Much Cheating, So Little Time
Why: Because ESPN did some honest to goodness investigative journalism and wrote this amazing piece on how America’s favorite pastime doesn’t actually care about its own rules. Denver Bronco’s quarterback Peyton Manning doesn’t cheat.

STORY OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: A Lifetime Of Bad Policy Leads To European Immigrant Crisis
Why: Because although United States politicians (I guess that’s how you refer to Trump is now?) like to claim that we have a huge problem with our borders (damn Canadians! [kidding]), there is an actual crisis happening within Europe. This is especially true with individuals fleeing from Syria.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (26 min. watch)
What: Ma Bell Is Hip To The Times

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. watch)
What: FPS, Explained

Greetings Webtaculators! Another week, and even more absurd news created by the actions of your fellow human beings. What a time to be alive, right? On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: 32 Million Caught Red Handed
Why: Because most of the time, adultery creates a lot of turmoil in 2-10 people’s lives. Ashley Madison’s data leak did that for the population of three Los Angeleses, all at once. The schadenfreude is especially strong with this particular story.

EDUCATION THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: Thinking Safely
Why: Because there have been a lot of articles recently about the protection of students from ideas. Although I personally think this an overblown sentiment, it still is worthwhile to discuss, since there is a difference between talking about uncomfortable ideas in a open manner and the need to allow students to feel safe while learning. Both are not mutually exclusive. Speaking of education, here’s how I should have chosen my major.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Let’s Project The Future Of Disney
Why: Because Disney is slowly taking over the world. However, since that includes changes like this and this , I’m not entirely sure I’m upset with that. Or it might end up more like Banksy’s idea, Dismaland.

Why: Because divorce lawyers will have a field day with this.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: The Sport That Can’t Be Saved
Why: Because concussions are a big deal in sports. As a high school lacrosse coach, I have seen way too many over the course of recent seasons, and this profile on ex 49er Borland feels really strongly that this is a problem.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (1 hr. 12 min. watch)
What: That Time I Was In A Movie With A Pornstar
Why: Because my good friend Owen Drake just (finally!) released his first feature film. He produced, directed, starred, and edited the entire project, and I’m super proud of his accomplishments.

TELEVISION THING OF THE WEEK (1 min. read)
What: The End Of ATHF
Why: Because Aqua Teen Hunger Force has basically been at the forefront of stoner comedy cartoons for adults since Cartoon Network realized that this was a huge market. The last one airs at midnight tonight.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (24 min. watch)
What: How Cellos Are Made
Why: Because even though you probably won’t understand what is being said, music is a language all to itself, and the process of how the instruments are built is mesmerizing.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: The First Digital Photograph
Why: Because you are spoiled when it comes to taking pictures.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: The Hugo Awards Has Some Issues
Why: Because the biggest awards in SF fiction might have a narrower mind of how the future will be than you would expect.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (12 min. watch)
What: A Primer To The Final Installation Of The Crazy Opus From The Mind Of Hideo Kojima
Why: Because the development of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain (it’s apparently really good) has been in question due to the rocky relationship between the creator and the publisher, Konami, which has a history of treating its employees poorly. If you really want to try to understand the story, you could also watch all 26 hours of videos from the cutscenes here.
