Webtacular World Issue #130, May 29, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day Weekend! Remember, it’s not just a time to revel in three days of not having to work; it’s supposed be for taking time to remember those who fell in battle while fighting in our wars. I hope you all were able to do that. On to the news.

NEWS THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The World Of Online Publishing

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. look)

Greetings Webtaculators! Petco Park in San Diego may be the saddest ballpark in America. It is a beautiful park in a great location in a laid back city, but absolutely no one actually goes to the games. It’s especially bad when there are more away fans (GO GIANTS!) than home fans at a game. Oh well, I guess that’s why I was able to get last minute tickets for $15. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (13 min. watch)
What: Trippin’
Why: Because it might be a good idea to have a better idea of how psychedelics actually effect the human mind.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)

Why: Because Werner Herzog is teaching 20 classes on how to be a documentary filmmaker.

TV THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)

Why: Because professional Donkey Kong player Wes Copeland (yes that’s a real thing) just smashed the alltime high score for Donkey Kong, in a way that will be almost impossible for a human to match. Just watch for a few minutes to see how much better he is than your one time that you had a few minutes to waste while waiting for a slice pizza.

Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK

Greetings Webtaculators! This is the view from my room for the week:File_000Sometimes working for the state has occasional benefits. Unfortunately, I get to spend the majority of my time in San Diego sitting in a conference room learning about utility ratemaking instead of enjoying this view. Oh well. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)

Why: Because for all the calls of suppression and censorship, Facebook is not a “news” provider or government entity, and therefore they can do whatever they want.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (9 min. watch)
What: Isn’t That Old?
Why: Because those were the first words out of my fiance’s mouth when asking why I was playing a game called Doom in 2016. For those of you who don’t know the first Doom came out in 1993, and was at one point the most installed piece of software in the world (yes, ahead of Windows).

Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK

Webtacular World Issue # 127, May 8, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Happy Mother’s Day! Side note: why isn’t it Mothers’ Day? I mean, it’s not like there’s just one mom worth celebrating. It’s all the moms. Given, in any “traditional” family, the assumption is that there is only one mom, but that doesn’t mean that it is only that one mom who deserves celebration. I demand grammatical correctness, damnit. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (6 min. look)
What: Pres(Tr)umptive Republican Nominee
Why: Because America deserves a slow clap for letting this happen. And yes, this purposefully links to a foreign news outlet because I can only imagine what the rest of the world thinks about this happening. “We’re gonna win bigly.” London decides to go in the opposite direction.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)

Why: Because he’s probably lying. Again.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: The Crime Of Sex
Why: Because this piece takes a long look at the criminalization of sex work, and its effect on the women the laws effect.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: 19 Years In The Making
Why: Because that is the slowest rounding of the bases I have ever seen. But then again, I’ve never hit a homerun in a major league ball park either.

MATH THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: Illegal Numbers
Why: Because encryption with a prime number is a hell of a weird practice.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK ()
What: Head Without Radio
Why: Because Radiohead released it’s newest album, A Moon Shaped Pool in a whirlwind of uninternet activity over the past week, followed by a release of the hauntingly beautiful Burn The Witch followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s music video of Daydreaming. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it since it came out today. The album is undoubtedly beautiful and well composed, but it seems something that would be more appropriate for background music or a movie soundtrack, much like the videos suggest. It suffers similar problems to 2011’s King Of Limbs – gorgeous melodies lost in the weight of Radiohead’s own back catalog (seriously, take another listen to Kid A or In Rainbows immediately for juxtaposition). However, if you want a Radiohead-esque vibe with some SoCal rap-rock and slap bass, look no further than the new Chili Peppers’ Dark Necessities, also produced by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Have fun looking for similarities.
IMMEDIATE UPDATE: So I’ve been listening to the album a little bit more through decent headphones turned way up while composing this issue. There’s a lot of mixing highlights and subtleties I am now noticing that I missed through my car speakers. Let’s just say it’s growing on me, but that just might be the bright computer screen and sleepiness talking.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Remnants Of Flame
Why: Because the Alberta fire is no joke.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: From 1 To Infinite
Why: Because Call of Duty is betting on the future, while Battlefield is betting on the past. The internet seems to be betting on the past, based off of YouTube likes.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: M&mmmms; I Hate Everything About This; Fight Knight
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Hammock Raft
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacular World Issue # 126, May 1, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Welcome to yet another week of Webtacular World. Weird, right? The fact that we here at Webtacular World have managed to put together 126 consecutive notices on a weekly basis probably confounds the few of you who actually know us (us meaning me, since, as of this publication, we are still a one person shop [the we makes us sound more professional in case anyone ever wants to buy us (wink wink rich friends)]). Recently, a friend of Webtacular World asked us how we maintain a consistent schedule, especially considering humans as a group of individuals are profoundly prone to being, well, lazy. This is not a bad thing!  In fact, this is the entire premise of how we manage to actually get a fully fledged product out the door every Sunday night. Basically, this counts as our Managing Editor’s relaxation from all of the other things he’s supposed to be doing at any given time. For some reason,  he finds digging through the drivel and poorly written content of The Internet to be therapeutic, since it reminds him of how small he is in the day to day operations of human output that presents itself in written or performed form from other publications. Humans are pretty amazing on the whole, and the reporting of what drives a bunch of other people who don’t happen to be our Managing Editor happen to be really interesting to him. On to the news.
