Greetings Webtaculators! Sometimes, it’s necessary to get away. Just ask the President. Luckily, I was able to spend the weekend with some good friends and good dogs in the snow.IMG_20170325_114502

Remember to take care of yourselves. On to the news.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Canada Will Now The High Hat
Why: Because Canada is looking to legalize weed by next year. Seeing how this already created a multi billion dollar industry in Colorado, it will be very interesting to see how this will effect Canada.

What: The Issue With Gorsuch
Why: Because appointing a Supreme Court Justice is inherently political, especially now.

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Too Much For Advertisers

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: More Madness
Why: Because most of these basketball games have been really entertaining.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Go Go Power Rangers
Why: Because Power Rangers is apparently a more than OK movie. But you might enjoy your other 90’s favorite, Beauty And The Beast, a little more.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: More Drake
Why: Because somehow Drake is continuing to own music.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: House Of Leaves
Why: Because the most recent book I’m reading is one that I first picked up almost 10 years ago, but lost somewhere along the way, and ran out of time to read 600 page books that you have to physically spin around to read. I’m glad I found it again.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Everything
Why: Because sometimes a great game only needs to be a space where you can roll around as an elephant and then turn into a planet.

Webtacular World Issue # 172, March 19, 2017

Greetings Webtaculators! It’s March Madness baby! Now, whether it’s mad due to basketball, the current political climate, or the fact that the month of March is already half way over is up for debate, but no one can deny that it’s crazy out there. Currently, I’m in Arizona to watch baseball, even though the Giants played about as poorly as a team can, but I now understand a few more things:
1. Arizona voted for Trump because it is unbelievably white. One thing city based Californians take for granted is diversity of its populous. I don’t mean this in a flippant way- but basically everyone I saw either out to dinner or in the ball park or at the pool was a brilliant shade of pasty white -> burnt red, with no real differentiation between “white” aside from the color of hair a person had or whether they hailed for the West Coast, the South, or the Mid West based on the slight variation of American English accent. As a counter example, on my current BART commute I am likely to hear a plethora of language other than English combined with complexions ranging from my translucence to any other shade you can imagine.
The problem is that no one in Scottsdale AZ is worried when the the President tries to blame problems on other people (see, e.g. “wall“). It creates the very real problem of “It doesn’t matter because we’re all the same, and foreigners are different, so this doesn’t effect any one I know.”Since empathy only travels so far, getting past a certain threshold means certain policies in a homogeneous localized aggregate basically effect no one, so the final effect seems beneficial. It creates the exact sort of situation where an Irish Prime Minister needs to remind the President that “illegals” not only consist of “non-white” folk (well, depending on what era you’re talking about). The lack of historical knowledge of this Presidency are terrifying. Which leads us to  my next point.
2. It was 96 degrees in Scottsdale today. The historical average for this time of year is supposed around 75. Luckily for us, global warming doesn’t exist according to our very smart Trump appointees. EVERYTHING IS FINE.
On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Let’s Play Budget Cut!
Why: Because this is reason # 593 why Trump does not understand what makes America great.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Strike 2
Why: Because Trump’s “non-Muslim” travel ban failed for the same reasons why the first one did – because it was anti-Muslim. The actual ruling is well worth the read.

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (20 min. read)
What: Women And Tech
Why: Because tech companies have a big problem that is not going to be resolved any time soon. Treat women better.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: Madness
Why: Because college basketball is fun.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Tale As Old As Time
Why: Because Beauty And The Beast broke records, even with it’s “controversial” gay character (you know, because everyone boycotted the original story for bestiality concerns).

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: Rock And Roll Is Dead
Why: Because this still rocks.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Who Gets To Write
Why: Because I bet none of those graduates actually has a book deal coming out of school.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Throwing Mass Effect Under The Bus
Why: Because there have been so many great games this year, fans are getting ready to hate one of the most loved franchises in the industry.

Greetings Webtaculators! Hope everyone remembered to change their clocks. At this point, change it however you feel like. I won’t blame you. Not knowing how to do things seems to be acceptable now. As if I needed another reminder of how not doing your job is ok, I just saw this shitty commercial for the upteenth time. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Corrupt President Impeached!
Why: Because in South Korea, being a political liability with dubious ties to shady businesses will lead to a new election. Here, it just leads to further denials of knowing anything. Good Job America!

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: Bye Bye Federal Government
Why: Because I guess the most recent unemployment numbers were too good, even if Trump is certain that all the ones before this one are phony. Might as well slash the numbers of largest American employer to make up for it. Or just fuck up our healthcare system. Why not both?

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: You’re Fired Because Reasons
Why: The DOJ under Sessions is looking to be off to a great start. Who needs justice, anyway? At least if you want to go to Harvard Law now, you don’t have to take the LSATs.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: No Climate Change To See Here Folks
Why: Because everything is fine.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Best Comeback Ever

Why: Because this is the best X-Men movie yet.

What: A History Of Bourdain
Why: Because leave it to a middling cook to become one of the foremost proponents of understanding people through what they eat.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Switch It Up
Why: Because it’s basically a Zelda machine until anything else comes out.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)

Webtacular World Issue # 170, March 5, 2017

Greetings Webtaculators! Another week, another total meltdown of the Executive Branch. I’m really beginning to wonder if the U.S. is just running on inertia at this point, since it has no true national leadership to speak of at the moment. Let’s see what happened this week – on to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: When No Means Yes
Why: Because Sessions met with Russian government officials, even though he said he didn’t. And now Trump claims that Obama “tapp”ed his conversations to deflect his Russia problem. The FBI says that didn’t happen.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: When A Budget Isn’t A Budget
Why: Because like most things, it’s probably better to pay attention to what Trump is actually doing about the budget as opposed to what he says he’s going to do.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: FISA And WIre Tapping – The More You Know
Why: Because even if he wanted to, Obama couldn’t unilaterally tap people. Trump really better start understanding this whole government thing soon.

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: What I Actually Meant To Include Last Week
Why: Because I goofed, so here’s the real article I meant to link to regarding my actual work.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Get Out And See Get Out In Theaters
Why: Because Jordan Peele (yes, of Key and Peele) made one of the smartest horror/comedy/racism commentary movies ever.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (20 min. read)
What: Meet Your Music Man
Why: Because Max Martin has written way too much music that we all know.

FOOD THING OF THE WEEK (20 min. read)
What: Real Meat Bleeds
Why: Because the goal of making the perfect veggie burger is getting closer to reality.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: Brian Reviews Books
Why: Because I started reading on my commute. In the last 2 weeks, I have gotten through 4 of them, and am half way through the 5th. First up are Norwegian Wood and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, both by Haruki Murukami. I liked Wind-Up bird a little better, due to it’s more mystical elements, while Norwegian Wood was a more melancholy look at growing up in post-war Japan. Next, Slam, by Nick Hornby, was a decent filler novel, although it does not really hold up to his previous masterpieces such as High Fidelity or Fever Pitch. My least favorite of the lot is 2084, by Algerian novelist Boualem Sensal. Like its title suggests, it’s an homage to the classic 1984, but it comes across as too on the nose with its description of a world in which a future version of Islam takes the place of Big Brother. Finally, I’m in the middle of The Wind Through The Keyhole, by Stephen King. I’m enthralled by it so far, but that’s likely due to the fact that it’s the most recent story that is part of the Dark Tower series, which I have been obsessed with since I was in 4th grade. If any of you have further reading suggestions, I’m all ears. BART rides are long.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (7 min. read)
What: Modern Masterpiece
Why: Because I have been playing Zelda: Breath Of The Wild all weekend, and no game in recent memory has made me want to explore a world as much as this does. This really might be one of the best games I have ever played.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: The Robots Already Won; Milk Steak; Missing Things
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Kindle, so I don’t have to carry so many physical books with me.
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Greetings Webtaculators! Well, I guess that’s one way to keep the Oscars interesting – just announce the wrong winner. #Fakeawards or something. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (Long reads)
What: What The In The Hell Happened In Trump’s America This Week
Why: Because here’s a quick recap via my friend Shea: “Sessions is awful, free press is being restricted by government, transgender bathroom rights in schools is going to be a fight, going to keep monetizing the prison system, and even though a hick shot two dudes from India because he assumed they were Middle Eastern (as if that’d be excusable), it is ‘too early’ to guess at his motives. All, in all, a pretty tame week for Trump.”

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Cuts And Increases
Why: Because of course cutting the EPA and ballooning the military budget is exactly what we need. Apparently Trump has no qualms killing people, whether they’re American or foreign. This is not hyperbole – the EPA has saved hundreds of thousands of lives with its directives.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Basically Never Talk To Anyone, Because Your IP Will Be Listening
Why: Because the Internet is going to become much less free.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)

Why: Because redefining the California energy development process is not easy.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: Baseball’s Back(ish)
Why: Because I missed it.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: The Oscars
Why: Because I’m glad Moonlighting won, although the La La Land people must feel absolutely awful. Also, Jimmy Kimmel did a much better job hosting than I think anyone assumed he would.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. listen)
What: Maggie Rogers And The Power Of Good Music
Why: Because the Pharrell found talent just released her new EP. It’s good.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: This Week’s Last Week Thing
Why: Because you probably should know more about our presidents.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Grand Horizons
Why: Because video games are already off to an amazing start this year, and Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the great ones.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Losing Things; Bonk; How To Be A Meme
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK

Webtacular World Issue # 168, February 19, 2017 Presidents’ Day Edition

Greetings Webtaculators! Happy Presidents’ Day Weekend! Go buy a car or something. Well, in response to last weeks low key nature, I guess this is what a “normal” week looks like for the current president. I bet Trump assumes this weekend is a celebration of how well he’s doing. I am personally at a loss for words, which is a small problem for this website, since this whole thing is supposed to be a way for me to put down words about how I think the previous week went, but I just don’t get it. None of this is normal, or helpful, or good. We’re watching a man who does not care about the United States as a concept willfully attempt to burn it all to the ground while a decently sized portion of the country continues to cheer him on. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (long reads)
What: How Do You Choose Just One?
Why: Because from the firing of Flynn, leaks that show the Trump administration was in contact with Russia during the election, the assassination of the Kim Jong Nam, the North Korean Leader’s half brother (after North Korea tested long range missiles), a backtrack on the decades long plan for a two state solution in the Middle East, an unhinged yell-a-thon at the press, the appointment of Pruitt, a climate denier, to the head of EPA, to a 3rd weekend vacation combined with the kickoff of Trump’s 2020 run for President with more fake terror attacks; really, you can’t.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: A Day Without Immigrants
Why: Because all of the anti immigrant rhetoric is slowly becoming a reality for both for immigrants and the people who hire them.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: TREASON!
Why: Because Trump’s actions are not, yet, at least according to my Constitutional Law professor.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: Saving The World
Why: Because vaccines, along with the help from Bill’s billions, have helped save hundreds of millions of children’s lives since 1990.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (1 min. watch)
What: More Pool Interviews, Please
Why: Because football is gone, and midseason basketball just isn’t worth the commentary.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Circle Of Donald
Why: Because between Glover and Alan Tudyk, Disney has been making some pretty great casting choices.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Weird Al Will Survive
Why: Because after the Grammys, “real music” has no idea what it’s doing anymore.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. look)
What: World Press Photo Winners
Why: Because now you can remember all the craziness that happened last year, too (WARNING, GRAPHIC).

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: His Dark Materials Part 2: Darkier Materials
Why: Because a beloved YA series is getting an “equal,” trilogy, probably before A Song Of Ice And Fire is finished.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Pointing And Clicking Is What Computers Are For
Why: Because Thimbleweed Park, made by some of the beloved creators of LucasArts classics such as Monkey Island looks to be a return to the good old days before video game personalities were known for making anti-Semitic jokes.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Tiny Trump;
Why: Because Internet.

Greetings Webtaculators! So I guess this is what a “quiet” week with Trump looks like – Tweeting about a department chain, about how he’s going to see a bunch of judges in court because he totally understands how our legal system works, shaking the Japanese Prime Minister’s hand, oh, and playing golf, because weekends.

In a completely different news, I am happy to announce that my brother somehow managed to convince his girlfriend to be his fiance.

chet-engagement

Congrats Chet and Steph! I’m so happy for you both! On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Destroying America’s Future
Why: Because the appointment of Betsy DeVos shows a complete disregard for the public education of our population.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Power Of Words
Why: Because if you’re going to blame a country for market manipulation, you might want to make sure you’re talking about the right ones.

ENVIRONMENTAL THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: Too Much Water
Why: Because California, in a turn of events, now has a problem of too much water. This can be extremely devastating.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: A Little Respect
Why: Because lawyers are finally being portrayed for the good things that they do.

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: How Keyboards Work
Why: Because you might as well understand how the thing you type on all the time actually makes the words appear on the screen.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (13 min. read)
What: Nothing But Keanu
Why: Because John Wick 2 is out.

TELEVISION THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: SNL Is Killing It
Why: Because Spicey.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (long read [if you read all of them (you should)])
What: The Real Biggest Night In Music
Why: Because even Adele thinks Beyonce should have won.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: A Reading List Of Fascism
Why: Because Kottke.org linked to a couple lists of books on Fascism, which seems slightly prescient at this time.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Defining A Genre
Why: Because First Person Shooters used to be called Doom clones before anyone realized it was a specific type of game, and Nioh seems to prove that Soulsbourne is now its own thing.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Working From Home; How To Raise Plants; The Science Guy
Why: Because Internet.

Greetings Webtaculators! If you’re like me, you probably are feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of ridiculousness going on – every day feels like there’s another crisis, each potentially worse than the last. That’s why, this week, I’m going to (try to) focus only on the positive things happening. We all could use a little bit more joy. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Liberty’s Best Friend, Justice
Why: Because after the immigration ban was given a restraining order, the 9th Circuit also ruled to reject a quick effort by the Department of Justice to place a stay on the initial ruling.

FOOD THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: When Food Gets Political
Why: Because avocados are delicious.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: What The Federalist?
Why: Because a relatively little known fact about me is that I held the position of Secretary for the board of my law school’s chapter of the Federalist Society, which is super confusing even to me to this day.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: What A Game
Why: Because you might as well read about one of the craziest football games I have ever watched from a British newspaper. Here’s some other things you could have watched instead.

COMMERCIAL THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. watch)
What: The Best Of The Game
Why: Because this year seemed… underwhelming. Except for this one.

TELEVISION THING OF THE WEEK (30 sec. watch)
What: Strangerer
Why: Because Stranger Things is amazing.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (13 min. watch)
What: Lady Gaga Has An Incredible Stage Presence
Why: Because I don’t know many people who can fly around a football stadium and still be able to sing.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (short look)
What: The New Catch
Why: Because I have no idea how Edelman held onto the ball.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Books By Refugees
Why: Because some of America’s greatest literary achievements were created by people who weren’t originally from here.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: More Like Palmer Notluckey
Why: Because Facebook, Palmer Luckey, and Brandon Iribe  were found guilty of failing to comply with NDAs regarding the creation of the Oculus Rift, and have to pay a total of $500 million. This might have a widespread negative effects for the growth of VR in general. At least games can usually make their own luck.

Greetings Webtaculators. A few wise words from my wife before we get going this week:

“Our new president seems to be trying to set a record for executive actions (a dozen so far in his first 6 days in office – 2 of those days were weekend days, so really we are looking at a dozen or so orders in his first 4 days), and despite attempts to chill freedom of the press, you should hear about them.

These orders will deeply harm causes near to my heart and will negatively impact a majority, if not all Americans. They include but are not limited to: ACA-rollback with no actual replacement plan in place from the president or congress, EPA freeze on communications and federal grants, immigration and deportations mandates (plus that damn stupid wall), the gag-rule on international family planning/pro-choice information and services (if you think this isn’t a bellwether for where this administration is going, especially with a Supreme Court vacancy, boy do I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you), and of course his first-ever-action in office: the rescinding of the mortgage-cut rate which makes it harder for first time home-buyers to purchase a home.

These orders don’t even take in to account his selections for cabinet and agency positions that are either incredibly inexperienced, diametrically opposed to the the agencies they are expected to lead, or, in most cases both. These agencies include the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Labor, and the Secretary of the Treasury (you might also want to review his picks for the department of energy, who four years ago couldn’t remember the name of the department but knew he wanted it abolished, the head of the department of small business administration, Linda McMahon – one of the heads of the WWE, and of course, President Trump’s pick for Attorney General – a position that is supposed to uphold the laws of our land and act as the litigative arm of the executive branch, Jeff Sessions – a man deemed too racist by 1980s standard to hold a federal judgeship. Don’t forget, all of these agencies have A TON of autonomy to pass regulations (i.e. rules that have the nearly have the same force as law passed by your democratically elected officials) and the free reign to not enforce laws or pass regulations as they see fit, as they mostly answer to the president as long as they act within some broad parameters of congress and public hearing processes.

These executive orders and nominations also do not take in to account bills introduced by the House and Senate in the new term. They include the removal of the United States from the United Nations (an organization we were instrumental in founding after WWII, and after we had previously backed out the League of Nations to pretty terrible results) and restrictions on women’s reproductive freedoms. And remember, one of the first things the Republican-controlled congress tried to do was dismantle the congressional ethics oversight committee.

So if I get more vocal because the democracy I was raised in- that used to believe and at least attempted to promote that men and women, from any race or religion, or sexual or gender orientation could participate fully In our system, has been downgraded from “full” to “flawed” democracy since President Trump’s swearing-in because of the actions he and our congress (and many state and local law makers) have taken, you are really going to have to excuse me.”

I should probably just let her do this going forward. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Week One
Why: Because this presidency is farce. For anyone who voted for Trump because you thought he should be given a chance, well, this is what you get. I am also grieving for our Muslim brothers and sisters who were attacked this evening while praying in a mosque in Quebec.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Everything Is Political
Why: Because when a company’s CEO is an economic adviser to a president, the company opens itself to political protest.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: Lawyers For Immigrants
Why: Because I am in awe of the work many of my classmates, friends, and colleagues performed this weekend. Trump’s ban on immigration is dangerous.

Greetings Webtaculators! Did you hear? Trump’s inauguration was YUGE! The biggest, period, even if NPS doesn’t count them. Even Kellyanne says so, because there are now such things as “alternative facts.” In all seriousness, what Trump said on his inauguration was atrocious. Here are my thoughts.

For those of you asking for people like me who think he is not fit to be President to “just give him a chance,” well, I just did, and he failed. On to the news.
