Webtacular World Issue # 124, April 17, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! So, I have to come clean with you all- I lied last week. You can still file your taxes tomorrow, if for some reason you still haven’t done them yet. Maine and Massachusetts folks, you can still wait one day more, if you’re feeling extra last minute. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: About Those Other Countries With Presidents…
Why: Because after a revelation of the entrenched corruption with one of the biggest gasoline manufacturers in the world, Brazil’s Congress voted to impeach the current President, Dilma Rousseff.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Luck Be A Lady Tonight
Why: Because the luck that goes into how rich you are also plays a big part in how long you will live.

EDUCATION THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: Paying To Learn
Why: Because although there is something to be said for providing affordable education, it probably isn’t a good thing that it potentially is siphoning away the families that would be more engaged in local education regardless if it were public or private. Not that even the best public schools are necessarily always forces for good, either.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (1 min. watch)
What: More Like A Quantum Minister
Why: Because Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau actually sort of knows what he is talking about.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: 73-9
Why: Because the Warriors just broke the record for regular season wins. Also, Curry broke his own 3 point record by over 100 shots.

TV THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. watch)
What: The Splash Of Adult Swim
Why: Because Space Ghost Coast to Coast was one of the most interesting shows to come out of my youth, and the channel has been on the forefront of the weirdening of TV.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What:  Women Should Probably Talk More
Why: Because this script analysis of over 2000 films shows that women have fewer than 40% of all spoken lines. Not good.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Hella Coach
Why: Because apparently you can’t just perform as yourself anymore.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (Long Look)
What: Earthquakes: Deadly Then, Deadly Now
Why: Because Ecuador was just hit by a massive 7.8 magnitude quake.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Reading Re-Re-Imagined
Why: Because there’s a new Kindle, which will make reading the most betterer than before. (Seriously, they say it “goes beyond a book” in their marketing material.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Forced Perspective
Why: Because in this day of free agency in gaming, where consumers expect to be given choices about how their avatar is spec’d out, its definitely an interesting take when a developer removes all choice in this regard.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Boaty McBoatface Is Real; Owl Riding A Toy Horse; Where Your Old iPhones Go
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Kindle Oasis
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacularly yours,
Brian

Webtacular World Issue # 123, April 10, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Ahhhh spring – the government is demanding you give them all your money, baseball is officially back, and the weather can’t decide if it still is winter or if it should just head straight to summer, and we still don’t know who is going to be president. What a wonderful time of year.

ALSO! Webtacular World is starting a new section devoted to cool things people in the Webtacular World community are doing. So, if you are doing something interesting that you think people should know about, feel free to shoot us an email or a phone call or telegram letting us know about it. Who knows! It might actually be featured in the next issue of Webtacular World to literally dozens of people! DOZENS! On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: The Fallout So Far
Why: Because hiding assets from the taxation system of a country you are running is probably a terrible idea. It is also a much bigger global issue than one might think.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: OJ, Revisited
Why: Because the FX miniseries was much more engaging than it should have been. We are also not done with this subject.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (36 min. watch)
What: It’s Not Like It’s Rocket Science
Why: Because Space X just successfully landed its reusable CRS-8 Dragon rocket on a barge in the middle of the ocean.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: College Basketball! Pro Basketball! Baseball! And Triathlons!
Why: Because now there are more sports on TV (and in the newspaper [remember those?]) for you to enjoy.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. watch)
What: Star Wars, Nothing But Star Wars
Why: Because even though The Force Awakens was basically Episode 4 Redux, I am still unreasonably excited for this.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. look)
What: Outside Lands 2016
Why: Because this is going to be an awesome show. MUPPETS!!!!

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (long look)
What: Changing Over Time
Why: Because cityscapes never stay the same for long.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Music That Makes Musicians
Why: Because even though NPR might be having some troubles, the content creators of the shows its affiliates produce are some of the best out there.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: That Other VR System
Why: Because the HTC Vive’s advantage (and seemingly biggest point against it) is that it is designed to let you wander around with your actual legs in a virtual space, you know, assuming you have a whole unfurnished room to devote to such a thing.

COMMUNITY THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read / 4 min. watch)
What: The Beauty Of The Mud Water Project
Why: Because I still maintain that I beat My-Linh in a dance off when we were in law school.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Toys Vs. Toys; Backflip Already;  Read These
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Champagne Gun
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacular World Issue # 122, April 3, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! This might have been the last year for April Fools, since Google basically ruined it for everyone. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Follow The Money
Why: The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung just released a treasure trove of financial documents from the offshore accounts of multiple international banks, businesses, legal firms, celebrities, and sports stars. This is going to be huge.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: I Got 15 On It
Why: Because the California Legislature approved a $15 minimum wage for Californians by 2022.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: BURN THE BOOK
Why: Because the Bluebook is the worst. Don’t worry, though, I already burned mine.
bluebook

TECH THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Virtual Reality Is Reality
Why: Because the Oculus Rift is here, and people who tried it seem to be saying it is a game changer. The Vive close behind.

AUTO THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: Tesla Model 3
Why: Because the newest Tesla already has over 270,000 reservations that probably won’t be delivered for a few years. Whoops.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Pay For Play
Why: Because the most successful soccer team in the U.S. doesn’t get paid as much as its less successful male counterparts. That should probably change.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: How They Used To Be Made
Why: Because after all these newfangled superhero movies have taken all our money, it’s nice to think back to the one that started it all.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The New White Album Sounds Blue
Why: Because this album sounds just like Weezer should.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (long look)
What: The World Press Photo Contest
Why: Because good photos are always good to look at.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)

Webtacular World Issue # 121, March 27, 2016

Happy Easter! Hope you’re ready to read nothing but sadness, because this week has been terrible. Good job March. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (20 min. read)
What: AnkaraBrusselsLahore
Why: Because terrorists are playing a relatively simple game; keep people who disagree with them in fear, while providing more messaging for their followers. Calling people who kill park-goers, travelers, and children cowards doesn’t do justice to the word.  My friend Mo put it better than I could:

“37 in Ankara, at least 31 in Brussels, and now over 50 in Lahore. Hundreds more wounded and fighting to survive. While each was perpetrated by a different group (PKK/TAK, ISIS, and who knows? respectively), they all targeted innocent civilians in public spaces, transit or infrastructure. This trend of terrorizing civic spaces holds true in less recent attacks (schools in Pakistan, stadiums, theaters and cafes in Paris, schools in Connecticut and Virginia, movie theaters in Colorado, and more)… [I]t’s truly sad that the wars we’ve fought to protect our freedoms have spawned attacks on those very freedoms we took for granted just a decade or two ago. We’re now more worried about getting on a plane, sending our kids to school, and going to the park. If the frequency of these attacks continues, we risk moving towards a society that’s far more restricted – perhaps not in the sense of actual state-imposed restrictions – but self-imposed restrictions to protect ourselves. That would be a real dystopia.

POLITICAL THING OF THE WEEK (30 min. read)
What: Trump In His Own Words
Why: Because even though it takes about 30-45 minutes to read this transcript of the Washington Post’s Editorial Board direct interview with Donald Trump, you should read every word. This unintelligible, self conflicting, ramble of nonsense are the direct words of one of the frontrunners of the President of the United States in response to questions such as: “…do you believe there are disparities in law enforcement?”, “[w]hat presidential powers and executive actions would you take to open up the libel laws?”, and “what [do] you see as the future of NATO?” All of these are reasonable questions to ask someone who’s primary job will be to direct a country’s direction on each of these topics. What is not reasonable is that Trump was unable to answer any of these in a way that actually responded to the call of the question. He is specifically unqualified to be President. Take this as Webtacular World’s official anti-endorsement.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The High Value Of A Sex Tape
Why: Because there are no winners in this lawsuit, or in the inevitable appeal.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: North Carolina Goes Backwards
Why: Because North Carolina thought that Charlotte’s laws protecting its LGBT citizens from discrimination were so abhorrent that it required the first special session in 35 years to block. Oh, they also struck down its mandatory increase in minimum wage. Just because.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Total Football Moves On
Why: Because John Cruyff, one of the few players to ever actually invent a move, passed away this week.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. look)
What: Badman And Stuporman Fail
Why: Because Zach Snyder managed to ruin what should have been an excellent movie. Instead, he turned Superman into Jesus and Batman into a mass murderer.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: You On Point Phife?
Why: Because Phife Dawg, part of the groundbreaking rap group A Tribe Called Quest, passed away due to complications from diabetes. ATCQ is one of the few music groups where I can remember the exact point in time where I first fell in love with their sound. It also helped that they didn’t take themselves too seriously.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. look)
What: Peep Show
Why: Because of course Donald won. Too many peeps.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: The Problem With Different Release Dates
Why: Because Dark Souls is one of my favorite gaming series, and it’s confusing as to why there are different global release dates for media at this point.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Funny Jokes, Or Something; Archer Reviews Bond; Too Many Peeps
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Peeps
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

More Like Matternope.

On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Cuba Libre
Why: Because a sitting President went to Cuba for the first time in 88 years.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Tech Diversity Problem
Why: Because Joelle, the founder of Paradigm, is a friend of mine from college, and she is doing good work. I mean, just look at Silicon Valley for why this is a problem.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What:  The Nominee Is
Why: Because in all other instances, Merrick B. Garland would be a slam dunk nomination for a seat in the Supreme Court. But of course, not this time.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. look)
What: More Madness
Why: Because just look at this thing. It’s complete nonsense.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: John Bestman
Why: Because John Goodman is a very, very good actor, even if he never is the main character.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (40 min. read)
What: The Future Of Music
Why: Because the NY Times Magazine (out of all places) has a very good take on where music is and where it is going.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Iconic Photographers
Why: Because apparently women can also take awesome pictures. Who knew?!?!

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (~33 hr. listen)
What: Moby Dick For Your Ears
Why: Because you can listen to all 135 chapters read by some famous and not so famous people.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The Emulation Problem
Why: Because the ability to make a operating system act like another console (i.e. make your PC be able to run Nintendo games) is one of the few ways that software can be preserved. Too bad companies don’t like it.

DRINK THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. watch)
What: The History Of Cocktail Glasses
Why: Because there’s a reason why martini glasses are so unwieldy.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Boaty McBoatface; Popestagram; Manivan
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Sick Kicks
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacular World Issue # 119, March 13, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Hooray! It’s Daylight Saving Time again! We finally get our afternoons back! Given, waking up for work tomorrow will be awful (basically it means I’ll be up at what my body will think is 4:30 AM), but I’ll take a little tiredness for my precious sun time. That is if it ever stops raining. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What:Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $1,000,000
Why: Because Go was previously considered to be an unwinnable game for AI – until now.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Slackers
Why: Because communication in the workplace is changing.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Forgotten Amendments
Why: Because there have been over 11,000 proposals to amend the Constitution.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. look)
What: Madness
Why: Because this is college basketball at its best.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The Potential For Franchises
Why: Because 10 Cloverfield Lane only slightly relates to the movie Cloverfield released 8 years ago.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: The Fifth Beatle
Why: Because George Martin was one of the most influential producers in rock. RIP.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. look)
What: Solar Eclipse Of The Camera
Why: Because solar eclipses look awesome.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: Dune In 4 Minutes
Why: Because the Dune series is one of the most sprawling SciFi series in existence, and this does a decent job of deconstructing its convoluted and slightly ridiculous story.

GAME THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What:  More Good Games
Why: Because the British Academy of Film and Television Arts actually treats games like art – and its awards show it.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Meet Brian; Sick Lettuce; Bird Loves Cups; The Issue With Bay Leaves
Why: Because Internet.

Webtacular World Issue # 118, March 6, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Happy March! It finally is feeling like a “normal” year, presidential debate penis size assurances notwithstanding. It’s actually cold, raining, and overcast, at least in California. But don’t worry, the weather is still breaking temperature records, just like its supposed to. No global warming here. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (21 min. watch)
What: Drumpf
Why: Because it isn’t often that a candidate receives an anti-endorsement. In somewhat tangentially related news, Nancy Reagan passed away at the age of 94. RIP.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The Wealthiest Get More Wealthy
Why: Because it somehow is getting harder and harder to be counted as one of the wealthiest people in the world. When even the super rich can’t be the richest, you know there’s something wrong.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: The Women Of The Supreme Court
Why: Because who is a Supreme Court Justice actually matters.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: A Space Hero For Our Time
Why: Because Commander Kelly (what an awesome title to have) returned back to Earth after a year in space. He also grew two inches, which is nice.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: A Greatest Ever Retires
Why: Because Peyton Manning, all other flaws aside, was a really good football player.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Disney Animation Is Back
Why: Because Zootopia is being heralded as an actual Disney classic along the same quality level as the Aladins and Little Mermaids of my youth. Nothing will come close to the Lion King, though.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. listen)
What: Goodness Still Exists
Why: Because NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest winner this year created a hauntingly beautiful song that makes you feel like humanity still has something going for it. Oh; there’s also a new Kendrick release, if you like that sort of thing (it’s amazing).

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. look)
What: Sony Pictures
Why: Because Sony’s World Photography Awards has some mighty fine images coming out of it.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: …And The Gunslinger Followed
Why: Because Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, one of my favorite book series ever, is finally getting a movie to go with it.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Pitfalls Of Cartridges
Why: Because the promise of an old-school system might just be too good to be true. This really is one of the stranger instances of Kickstarter-projects-gone-wrong I have ever seen (and I might be someone who knows just a little about that… [sorry]).

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)

Greetings Webtaculators! Can we all agree on something? If you retweet a Mussolini quote because you think it’s a good quote, you don’t get to be President – ESPECIALLY if people already think that you sound a little Fascist. That’s immediate disqualification for running a democracy. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Reform In Iran
Why: Because Iran’s reformist party swept elections held as a result of signing a nuclear accord. Maybe political negotiation does work after all.

What: Kesha And The Failure Of The Music Industry
Why: Because these type of rulings show just how awful the recording industry can be.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (long look)

STORY OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: The Death Of A Justice
Why: Because Justice Antonin Scalia was one of the most outspoken and derisive members of the Supreme Court. I had a chance to see Justice Scalia speak in person as a prospective law student at American University. He was incredibly knowledgeable, well spoken, and entirely dismissive (and frankly disrespectful) of students who asked questions regarding some of his more controversial rulings. Basically, he lived up to his reputation.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: Potential Energy
Why: Because when storage scales to a large enough size, the entire way in which we produce energy will change.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. listen)
What: What Happens Now?
Why: The Senate has the power to approve whoever the President appoints for the open seat on the Supreme Court. However, due to this opening occurring during a very contentious election year, some members of the Senate have already sworn that they would not affirm anyone until the next president is in office – almost a year from now
