Webtacular World Issue # 127, May 8, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Happy Mother’s Day! Side note: why isn’t it Mothers’ Day? I mean, it’s not like there’s just one mom worth celebrating. It’s all the moms. Given, in any “traditional” family, the assumption is that there is only one mom, but that doesn’t mean that it is only that one mom who deserves celebration. I demand grammatical correctness, damnit. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (6 min. look)
What: Pres(Tr)umptive Republican Nominee
Why: Because America deserves a slow clap for letting this happen. And yes, this purposefully links to a foreign news outlet because I can only imagine what the rest of the world thinks about this happening. “We’re gonna win bigly.” London decides to go in the opposite direction.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: The Next Currency Creator
Why: Because he’s probably lying. Again.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: The Crime Of Sex
Why: Because this piece takes a long look at the criminalization of sex work, and its effect on the women the laws effect.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (2 min. read)
What: 19 Years In The Making
Why: Because that is the slowest rounding of the bases I have ever seen. But then again, I’ve never hit a homerun in a major league ball park either.

MATH THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: Illegal Numbers
Why: Because encryption with a prime number is a hell of a weird practice.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK ()
What: Head Without Radio
Why: Because Radiohead released it’s newest album, A Moon Shaped Pool in a whirlwind of uninternet activity over the past week, followed by a release of the hauntingly beautiful Burn The Witch followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s music video of Daydreaming. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it since it came out today. The album is undoubtedly beautiful and well composed, but it seems something that would be more appropriate for background music or a movie soundtrack, much like the videos suggest. It suffers similar problems to 2011’s King Of Limbs – gorgeous melodies lost in the weight of Radiohead’s own back catalog (seriously, take another listen to Kid A or In Rainbows immediately for juxtaposition). However, if you want a Radiohead-esque vibe with some SoCal rap-rock and slap bass, look no further than the new Chili Peppers’ Dark Necessities, also produced by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Have fun looking for similarities.
IMMEDIATE UPDATE: So I’ve been listening to the album a little bit more through decent headphones turned way up while composing this issue. There’s a lot of mixing highlights and subtleties I am now noticing that I missed through my car speakers. Let’s just say it’s growing on me, but that just might be the bright computer screen and sleepiness talking.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Remnants Of Flame
Why: Because the Alberta fire is no joke.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: From 1 To Infinite
Why: Because Call of Duty is betting on the future, while Battlefield is betting on the past. The internet seems to be betting on the past, based off of YouTube likes.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: M&mmmms; I Hate Everything About This; Fight Knight
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Hammock Raft
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacularly yours,
Brian
