Webtacular World Issue # 134, June 26, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Just when you think that the world will do something rational for once, a country decides to implode the global market because it thinks it’s not free, even though most of the rest of the world spent the last century trying to free themselves from that country. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: Bregret
Why: Because in order to really understand what this vote this vote really was about, take a look at this video, and then this one, by main Brexit proponent Nigel Farage. Then look at him giving arguably one of the most tone deaf victory speeches ever. Oh, he also lied about one of the main arguments for leaving. At least the people who voted for it understood it and are happy. Oh wait, they didn’t, and they aren’t. Good job, Great Britain, you are officially the dumbest country, at least until November, when this guy has a legitimate shot at becoming the President of the U.S.

ECONOMIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: See Brexit, supra
Why: Because the market hates nothing more than uncertainty, and the only thing certain about a Brexit vote was uncertainty.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Immigrants Just Can’t Catch A Break This Week
Why: Because one thing that is absolutely clear about this week is that white people are scared. At least Affirmative Action was upheld.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Copa De Chile
Why: Because Chile defeated Messi’s Argentina for the second year in a row to win the Copa America, which apparently was Messi’s last appearance for Argentina.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Independencier
Why: Because much like the fools who led the Brexit who can’t stop quoting the first one, the new Independence Day is terrible.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: The Future Of Popular Rap, Or Something
Why: Because I had to listen to white high school guys imitate this goddamn song all spring.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (long look)
What: 45 Years Of Pride
Why: Because it was SF Pride this weekend, and one of the oldest gay parades had an extra meaningful celebration this year.

LITERATURE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Understanding War Through Fiction
Why: Because sometimes the best war stories need to be told through a pretend lens.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What: WASD
Why: Because the now common keyboard input for game movement was not a given.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Jumping Goats; Human PrehistoryDrunk and Noble; Transportation Haiku Battle
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Mac N’ Cheetos
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacular World Issue # 133, June 19, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Want to know how I’m getting old? Well, you probably don’t but I’ll tell you anyway – this is the first year that I have been in existence where a decent minority of my friends and colleagues on social media were being wished a happy father’s day instead of doing the well-wishing themselves. It’s pretty cool to think about how many people I know who were barely able to function on their own just a few years ago are now responsible for an entire additional human being! I’m kidding! They’re all doing fan”stackic” so far. Sorry. It’s an attempt at a dad joke. I’m still practicing.

Now for something completely unrelated – Between a week full of car and computer problems, it is sort of disheartening to realize how much I depend on some combination of metal, plastic, and glass working correctly in order to do basically anything. Medieval me would be highly disappointed in my inability to function without technology (but only after burning me as a witch for riding in a metal beast and then watching a moving picture on a metal slab). On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: The Brexit
Why: Because what started off last week as a humourous naval battle quickly became a national tragedy.

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (10 min. read)
What: The Collapse Of Law And Order
Why: Because Oakland, is completely failing its constituents.

BUSINESS THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Bumbling Officials And Fallen Greats
Why: Because sports sure was exciting this weekend. Yup. Just soccer and golf. Nothing else to see here. Oh, I guess this happened too (ugh… Good job Cleveland).

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK ()
What: The New Definitive Pixar List
Why: Because Pixar just released a very good Pixar movie about a fish with a disability. How are they so good at story telling?!?! Oh, here’s how.

TV THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: So That’s Where This Season’s Budget Went (SPOILERS!)
Why: Because this season of Game Of Thrones has been relatively underdeveloped since it sprinted ahead of the books, but this episode really delivered.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. listen)
What: Songs For Summer
Why: Because DJ Earworm is also letting me know I’m old since I have no idea what most of these songs are. I’m too busy listening to the new Chili Peppers.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Best Of E3
Why: Because there’s a new Zelda.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Car Pool Chilioke; It’s A SPACE STATION!; Fathers Day Cards Suck

Greetings Webtaculators. I am once again appalled by the way humanity can act. My thoughts are with Orlando. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: 50 Dead In Orlando In Club Shooting
Why: Because I have no more words for how this makes me feel. So I will instead let my friend Scott say it in his own words.

“Safety. That’s what’s on my mind this morning.
I remember the first time I went to a gay bar and the incredible sense of safety that swept over me. These were my people. I could let down my guard. I would be okay.
Nothing is safe any more. Not a kindergarten. Not a movie theater. Not a gay bar where many went to escape unsafe situations elsewhere.
And we’re responsible for creating unsafe situations everywhere, around the world.
Guns, extremism, greed, power, colonialism, racism and misogyny, all enabled and unchecked, have created this status quo. I’m so sad and ashamed.”

POLITICAL THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: First Presumptive Woman Candidate Of A Major Party
Why: Because Hillary Clinton claimed victory in the Democratic Primary.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Bay Can’t Win ‘Em All…
Why: Because the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 in the final game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They play a sport called hockey. You really should check it out sometime.

MOVIE THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: How Much People Who Make Movies Make
Why: Because lots of people work on movies, and those people (mostly) make pretty good money doing it.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (8 min. read)
What: Pet Sounds Still The Best Sounds
Why: Because the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds turns fifty this year, and remains one of the most innovative albums ever. (Sorry Yeezy, Life Of Pablo is just OK).

Why: Because Settlers of Catan is one of the most popular board games of all time, so you should probably know something about it.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Why Does E3 Still Exist?
Why: Because the biggest video game industry event has become seemingly less necessary, it still remains an important barometer of the future of games. Here are some of the big ones coming in the near future.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: Country Songs; Simpsons Meets Rick And Morty, Chaos Ensues; Mo Cap Mo Dance
Why: Because Internet.

Greetings Webtaculators! I hope you all had as great of a Sunday as I did – drinking wine, watching the Warriors crush the Cavs, and getting Beyoncemacated. Hope everyone had a great weekend as well. On to the news.

What: RIP To The Greatest
Why: Because Ali was more than the greatest boxer that ever lived; he was an icon of the anti war movement, of black power, and of Islam.

What: You’re Welcome
Why: Because this is what I actually do for my real job. See? I’m helping!

LAW THING OF THE WEEK (20 min. read)
What: Rape Is Not OK
Why: Because this outcome is indicative of both how we treat rape in the US, and how privilege plays a role in the outcome of litigation.

SCIENCE THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: How To Look At Data
Why: Because most of us probably spend time trying to analyze data in some way or another, so understanding the best way to produce data for humans to be able to understand is probably helpful.

SPORTS THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Djokovic Finally Conquers France
Why: Because Novak Djokovic finally won the French Open after 12 years.

INTERNET THING OF THE WEEK (long read)
What: Grantland Part II
Why: Because Bill Simmons just released his newest online thing on the world. It already is terrible because one of its first articles defends Joe Buck, the worst human being in the world (only because he hates Bay Area sports for some reason- he seems OK otherwise).

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: Wedding Music
Why: Because now I don’t need to make my own playlist.

FOOD THING OF THE WEEK (15 min. read)
What: Pho-king Good
Why: Because Pho is one of my favorite types of my favorite food. Yes, soup is my favorite kind of food. Take your favorite dish, put it in a broth, and I guarantee that the outcome is 100x better.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (13 min. watch)
What: How FPS’s Work
Why: Because making a game that essentially boils down to pushing the W, S, A, D, and “space” keys while moving and clicking your mouse try to feel good is actually challenging.

Greetings Webtaculators! I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day Weekend! Remember, it’s not just a time to revel in three days of not having to work; it’s supposed be for taking time to remember those who fell in battle while fighting in our wars. I hope you all were able to do that. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (6 min. read)
What:  A Call To End To The War Ender
Why: Because a sitting President has never directly addressed the bombing of Hiroshima before. It is fitting way to acknowledged all the victims of World War II.

NEWS THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: The World Of Online Publishing

Greetings Webtaculators! Petco Park in San Diego may be the saddest ballpark in America. It is a beautiful park in a great location in a laid back city, but absolutely no one actually goes to the games. It’s especially bad when there are more away fans (GO GIANTS!) than home fans at a game. Oh well, I guess that’s why I was able to get last minute tickets for $15. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (13 min. watch)
What: Trippin’
Why: Because it might be a good idea to have a better idea of how psychedelics actually effect the human mind.

What: Learnin’ With The Herz
Why: Because Werner Herzog is teaching 20 classes on how to be a documentary filmmaker.

TV THING OF THE WEEK (5 min. read)
What: Ratings And Sex
Why: Because male dominated polls might be skewing websites’ reporting of how popular shows actually are. But don’t worry, Real Housewives is still terrible. No one should watch it. Ever.

Why: Because this video breaks down how the best in the biz construct their songs.

Why: Because the author of the classic Into The Wild revisited his assumptions about what caused Chris McCandless’ death in the Alaskan wilderness.

What: A Perfect Game Of Donkey Kong
Why: Because professional Donkey Kong player Wes Copeland (yes that’s a real thing) just smashed the alltime high score for Donkey Kong, in a way that will be almost impossible for a human to match. Just watch for a few minutes to see how much better he is than your one time that you had a few minutes to waste while waiting for a slice pizza.

Greetings Webtaculators! This is the view from my room for the week:File_000Sometimes working for the state has occasional benefits. STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)

Why: Because for all the calls of suppression and censorship, Facebook is not a “news” provider or government entity, and therefore they can do whatever they want.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (9 min. watch)
What: Isn’t That Old?
Why: Because those were the first words out of my fiance’s mouth when asking why I was playing a game called Doom in 2016. For those of you who don’t know the first Doom came out in 1993, and was at one point the most installed piece of software in the world (yes, ahead of Windows).

Greetings Webtaculators! Happy Mother’s Day! Side note: why isn’t it Mothers’ Day? I mean, it’s not like there’s just one mom worth celebrating. It’s all the moms. Given, in any “traditional” family, the assumption is that there is only one mom, but that doesn’t mean that it is only that one mom who deserves celebration. I demand grammatical correctness, damnit. On to the news.

MATH THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. watch)
What: Illegal Numbers
Why: Because encryption with a prime number is a hell of a weird practice.

MUSIC THING OF THE WEEK ()
What: Head Without Radio
Why: Because Radiohead released it’s newest album, A Moon Shaped Pool in a whirlwind of uninternet activity over the past week, followed by a release of the hauntingly beautiful Burn The Witch followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s music video of Daydreaming. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it since it came out today. The album is undoubtedly beautiful and well composed, but it seems something that would be more appropriate for background music or a movie soundtrack, much like the videos suggest. It suffers similar problems to 2011’s King Of Limbs – gorgeous melodies lost in the weight of Radiohead’s own back catalog (seriously, take another listen to Kid A or In Rainbows immediately for juxtaposition). However, if you want a Radiohead-esque vibe with some SoCal rap-rock and slap bass, look no further than the new Chili Peppers’ Dark Necessities, also produced by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Have fun looking for similarities.
IMMEDIATE UPDATE: So I’ve been listening to the album a little bit more through decent headphones turned way up while composing this issue. There’s a lot of mixing highlights and subtleties I am now noticing that I missed through my car speakers. Let’s just say it’s growing on me, but that just might be the bright computer screen and sleepiness talking.

PHOTOGRAPHY THING OF THE WEEK (4 min. read)
What: Remnants Of Flame
Why: Because the Alberta fire is no joke.

VIDEO GAME THING OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: From 1 To Infinite
Why: Because Call of Duty is betting on the future, while Battlefield is betting on the past. The internet seems to be betting on the past, based off of YouTube likes.

INTERNET THINGS OF THE WEEK (∞)
What: M&mmmms; I Hate Everything About This; Fight Knight
Why: Because Internet.

THING YOU SHOULD GET BRIAN OF THE WEEK
What: Hammock Raft
Why: Because Brian deserves it.

Webtacular World Issue # 126, May 1, 2016

Greetings Webtaculators! Welcome to yet another week of Webtacular World. Weird, right? The fact that we here at Webtacular World have managed to put together 126 consecutive notices on a weekly basis probably confounds the few of you who actually know us (us meaning me, since, as of this publication, we are still a one person shop [the we makes us sound more professional in case anyone ever wants to buy us (wink wink rich friends)]). Recently, a friend of Webtacular World asked us how we maintain a consistent schedule, especially considering humans as a group of individuals are profoundly prone to being, well, lazy. This is not a bad thing!  In fact, this is the entire premise of how we manage to actually get a fully fledged product out the door every Sunday night. Basically, this counts as our Managing Editor’s relaxation from all of the other things he’s supposed to be doing at any given time. For some reason,  he finds digging through the drivel and poorly written content of The Internet to be therapeutic, since it reminds him of how small he is in the day to day operations of human output that presents itself in written or performed form from other publications. Humans are pretty amazing on the whole, and the reporting of what drives a bunch of other people who don’t happen to be our Managing Editor happen to be really interesting to him. On to the news.

Greetings Webtaculators! Hope everyone is having a great time celebrating Passover! We here at Webtacular World just assume that everyone else celebrates Judaism, since it just makes it easier for us. However, if for whatever reason, you have no idea why Jews decide to eat a terrible version of bread for a week (OR DO WE????), please feel free to see INTERNET THING OF THE WEEK for what is basically a Seder service. On to the news.

STORY OF THE WEEK (3 min. read)
What: The Prince Of Purple
Why: Because Prince was one of the most prolific and influential musicians of our time. Again, a transformative musician’s death has been one of the bigger stories of the week. Again, it’s hard to fathom how this is the “story of the week,” considering how many other things that seem like they should be more important. However, the fact that individuals such as Prince really do change the course of culture on a prolific level shows just how important these people actually are. Here are some other songs that he also was responsible for.
